An exploration of fear, control, and the unseen weight of eating disorders. To many, food is a source of comfort, celebration, or routine, but for those battling eating disorders, it can feel monstrous, overwhelming, and suffocating. This photographic series aims to make visible the invisible, giving form to the fear that can accompany even the simplest of meals. By dramatically scaling up everyday foods and placing miniature human figures within each composition, I wanted to visualise the internal reality of someone struggling with disordered eating. The giant biscuits, cakes, chocolate and donuts are not just enlarged for visual effect, they represent how food can dominate the mind, casting long shadows of guilt, anxiety and helplessness. Each tiny figure expresses a different emotional response. Some flee, some hide, others crumble under the imagined weight. Though they are small, their fear is loud. These characters do not merely decorate the scenes, they embody the distress, confusion, and isolation that often accompany eating disorders. The title ‘Larger Than Life’ acts as a metaphor. Not just for the literal size of the food, but for the disproportionate emotional and psychological impact it can have. It reflects how something so ordinary and fun becomes exaggerated and so overwhelming in the minds of those who suffer, and how that distortion can feel both endless and inescapable. This work is not just about food. It’s about how we see ourselves, how we carry fear in silence, and how important it is to approach these hidden struggles with empathy and understanding.
